Correction technology for climate change prediction developed and portal site released

4 Feb 2020

NK-ClimVault, a portal site for obtaining free future climate forecast information on rainfall and temperature for major cities is launched

Nippon Koei has developed TR3S, a new bias correction method for climate change prediction and launched NK-ClimVault, a portal site for free access to future climate forecast information on rainfall and temperature in major cities. NK-ClimVault, a portal site that allows users to obtain free future climate forecasting information on rainfall and temperature for major cities, is now open to the public.

Development of new bias correction method

In order to calculate the climate projection figures for each region, we have used a number of climate projection models (GCM: General Circulation Model) developed by research institutes around the world. The output of many General Circulation Model (GCM) models developed by research institutes around the world must be corrected to align its bias (error) with actual observations. Nippon Koei has developed a new bias correction method named TR3S. This technology is more efficient than existing bias correction methods. This technique has been published in WRR (Water Resources Research), a prestigious international journal in the hydrological field.

NK-ClimVault Portal Site Launched

NK-ClimVault is a portal site that allows users to browse the future climate projection information (rainfall, temperature) and time-series data for major cities up to 2099 on a world map. In order to adapt to climate change, we first need simulation data to understand how the future climate will change from the present.

To utilize similar data in the past, it was necessary to correct the huge amount of forecast data calculated from major climate prediction models. On the other hand, this site makes it possible to obtain the data which is already processed properly.

The data obtained from this site can be used for regional planning purposes, corporate factory construction planning and other future climate change risk studies. In addition, the data obtained from this site is expected to be used as basic information for research in various fields such as health, environment, and agriculture. The site is intended to be used for climate change adaptation business and research in a variety of fields.
